Meta reportedly discussed a possible settlement with US states over social media harms
Meta has discussed a possible out-of-court settlement with several US states in litigation over the allegedly addictive nature of social media, Handelsblatt reported, citing Bloomberg and anonymous sources. The talks were not immediately confirmed. Several states accuse Meta of deliberately designing Facebook and Instagram to make young users dependent and claim the platforms contribute to anxiety, depression and even suicide among young people. Twenty-nine states also accuse the company of illegally collecting children’s personal data. Meta rejects the allegations and says it works to protect young people.
