Ebola Epidemic in the DRC: Bundibugyo Strain Advances in Mongbwalu, Ituri
An Ebola epidemic caused by the Bundibugyo strain—a variant associated with major outbreaks across Africa—has erupted in Mongbwalu, a locality in Ituri province in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, and is spreading rapidly. First reported in May 2026, the outbreak has led to imported cases in North Kivu and South Kivu provinces, as well as in Kampala, Uganda's capital. Two journalists from Le Monde Afrique traveled to the epicenter to cover the epidemic from the ground.
