On the night of July 18–19, 2026, Russia launched more than 40 ballistic missiles of various types and 120 attack drones against Kyiv. Dozens of explosions resounded through the center of the Ukrainian capital, home to three million residents, according to the Handelsblatt, citing a dpa news agency journalist on the ground.

Ukrainian air defense recorded 23 missile impacts and 10 drone impacts—with a large portion of the projectiles having been intercepted. The official toll stands at 1 dead and 16 wounded.

The attack destroyed multiple houses and vehicles and triggered fires across several neighborhoods, according to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko. Ukrainian reactions and calls for aid

Zelensky called the assault one of the most massive ballistic attacks on Kyiv. Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha labeled it "brutal terror" on X and stated that Russia deployed the largest number of ballistic missiles against Kyiv since the war began. Both officials urged the West to urgently deliver air defense missiles.

Ukraine lacks interceptor missiles for its Patriot air defense system, critical for defending against ballistic missiles. Zelensky stated that interceptors are needed every day.
