Ireland: sophisticated bomb intercepted on road, two suspects linked to dissident republicans arrested
On Wednesday, July 22, 2026, the Garda Síochána — Ireland's national police force — intercepted a vehicle carrying a ready-to-use explosive device on the N2 south of Carrickmacross (County Monaghan). The device, described as "highly sophisticated," contained military-grade explosives, a detonator, and a power unit. Its probable target was an attack in Northern Ireland. Two suspects were arrested and remained in custody on Friday, July 24. Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly linked the suspects to Irish dissident republicans.
