Nepal: Water Reservoir Threatens to Burst After Glacier Collapse
Nepal issued an alert Friday about the risk of rupture of a vast water reservoir formed in Chinese Tibet following a glacier collapse that occurred two days earlier. The disaster triggered a flood and landslides. Death toll estimates vary significantly, ranging from at least 163 to 579 deaths and 1,400 to nearly 2,000 missing persons. In Nepal, 104 people have been rescued, but mud and blocked roads are hampering relief efforts. Scientists warn of similar risks in mountainous regions worldwide, including the Alps.
