What happened on day one

Bangladesh took control of the opening day of the first Test in Darwin, according to the BBC. Australia won the toss and elected to bat.

Australia were bowled out for 198 as Hasan Mahmud recorded career-best figures of six wickets for 55 runs.

Steve Smith was dropped when he had scored two. He went on to make 71 before being dismissed off Hasan Mahmud's bowling.

Smith also survived a dismissal on review when he was on seven after Snicko, the technology used to detect contact with the bat, showed a flat line as the ball passed. Smith later said he believed he had touched the ball.

Australia's late collapse

Australia reached 152-5 before losing their final five wickets for 46 runs. Taskin Ahmed was among the wicket-takers, dismissing Beau Webster.

Bangladesh's reply

Mitchell Starc dismissed Shadman Islam, but Bangladesh lost no further wickets before the close.

Tanzid Hasan Tamim finished unbeaten on 32, while Mominul Haque was not out on 35.

Bangladesh closed on 96-1, still 102 runs behind Australia's first-innings total.
