The Federal Tax Administration (ESTV) publishes annual tax statistics for Swiss municipalities. The 2022 data, covering 2,129 communes, enables comparison of average taxable income per individual taxpayer subject to the federal direct tax (FDT).
The national average taxable income stands at 61,668 francs per taxpayer. Wollerau (SZ) leads the rankings with 199,928 francs — more than three times the national average.
Five of the top 10 highest-income communes are in canton Zurich: Erlenbach, Herrliberg, Küsnacht, Zumikon, and Uitikon. Three others are in Schwyz: Wollerau, Feusisberg, and Freienbach.

Wollerau tops the list, followed by Feusisberg (SZ, 177,118 francs) and Corsier (GE, 157,169 francs), which complete the podium. All communes in the top 10 exceed an average taxable income of 139,000 francs.
Oberems (VS) records the lowest average taxable income: 33,109 francs, representing a 1:6 ratio with Wollerau. Three communes from Bern (BE) and three from Grisons (GR) also appear in this bottom ranking.
Among French-speaking communes, Corsier (GE) ranks 3rd nationally with 157,169 francs. Jouxtens-Mézery (VD, 140,354 francs) also features in the Swiss top 10.
Greng (FR, 116,667 francs), Tannay (VD, 116,470 francs), and Coppet (VD, 111,786 francs) complete the top 5 for French-speaking communes.
Average taxable income is calculated by dividing each commune's total taxable income by its number of individual taxpayers. Communes with fewer than 100 taxpayers are excluded from the analysis.
Certain income brackets are masked by the ESTV to protect tax privacy. These are counted as zero in the calculation, which may result in a slight underestimation of the reported averages.
