Bulgaria: Drone Explodes 1 km from Pipeline at Romanian Border
An explosive-laden drone penetrated Bulgarian airspace and exploded on August 8, 2026, in a sunflower field near the Kardam border post between Romania and Bulgaria, just 1,000 meters from a compression station on the Trans-Balkan gas pipeline connecting Turkey to Ukraine. Bulgaria's Defense Ministry assessed the drone as likely of Ukrainian origin, a type frequently used by Ukrainian forces. Initial debris analysis suggests no intentional targeting. In response, Bulgaria has strengthened border surveillance and deployed troops equipped with anti-drone systems.
