Colombia earthquake: magnitude 7.4 quake kills 132 and injures more than 570
A magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck Chocó in western Colombia early on August 10, 2026, killing 132 people and injuring more than 570. Authorities reported 188 people missing in Cali, where rescuers and volunteers searched collapsed buildings. The epicentre was near San José del Palmar. At least 86 buildings collapsed, approximately 1,500 homes were damaged and seven airports suspended operations. President Abelardo de la Espriella declared a state of emergency and promised a coordinated rescue effort. Searches also continued in Manizales and Pereira, while the Colombian Geological Survey recorded 47 aftershocks by late afternoon.
