Lake Kariba ferry disaster: 68 dead, including 18 children, after overloaded vessel capsizes
A ferry capsized in heavy winds on Lake Kariba, on the Zimbabwe-Zambia border, on August 11, 2026. The death toll reached 68, including 18 children, after 22 more bodies were recovered on August 15, Zimbabwean police said. An investigation found that the vessel was overloaded: it was carrying 114 adults, five crew members and an unspecified number of children, despite being authorised for 90 people. Zimbabwe's civil protection unit said 77 people had been rescued by August 12. The disaster is believed to be the deadliest of its kind in Zimbabwe's history.
