Meta accepts $18 billion penalty and limits children’s Instagram use in the US
Meta has accepted an $18 billion penalty as part of a settlement in the United States. According to the Neue Zürcher Zeitung, the company will also introduce child-protection measures, including limits on how long children can use Instagram in the US. The changes follow pressure from a broad coalition of Republicans and Democrats. Twenty-nine US states accuse Meta, the parent company of Instagram and Facebook, of making minors dependent on its services for profit. Although the proceedings concern digital technologies, they draw on legal cases from the analogue era as models.
