Thousands of migrants cross Ceuta border in single night, at least 18 dead

In the night of July 30-31, 2026, over 60,000 migrants crossed the border between Morocco and Ceuta, an autonomous Spanish enclave. The death toll stands at over thirty. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez visited the enclave on July 31 with Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska. This marks the largest influx to Ceuta since May 2021, prompting demands from Finland, Denmark, and Italy for Spain's exclusion from the Schengen zone.

144 migrants dead or missing off Mauritania in a week, one boat responsible for the tragedy

From July 13 to 19, 2026, 144 migrants died or went missing off Mauritania, according to the UNHCR (UN Refugee Agency, a UN programme based in Geneva). Nearly all deaths were caused by a single vessel departing from Bufalo, Gambia, that was rescued on July 18 after 25 days adrift in the Atlantic Ocean: 143 dead or missing, 38 survivors. Mauritania: 144 dead or missing in one week on the Canary Islands route

A total of 144 people died or went missing off Mauritania during the week of July 13–19, 2026, according to the UNHCR (UN Refugee Agency). The toll was dominated by a single vessel that departed from Bufalo in Gambia and drifted for approximately 25 days on the Atlantic before being rescued on July 18: 143 passengers died or went missing, while 38 survived. Israeli Army Destroys Three More Schools in Southern Lebanon, at Least 20 Total

The Israeli military destroyed three schools in southern Lebanon by explosives on July 18, 2026, bringing the total number of educational institutions destroyed since the conflict began to at least 20, according to Lebanon's Education Minister Rima Karami. Over 100 additional schools have been damaged. UNESCO warned in June 2026 that approximately 500,000 Lebanese children remain out of school.
