Japan: 361.5 mm of rain falls in 24 hours in Himi, prompting mass evacuations
Extreme rainfall has again hit Japan, with 361.5 mm recorded in 24 hours in Himi, Toyama Prefecture. Persistent rain affected Toyama and Ishikawa prefectures, where rivers overflowed and flash floods and landslides brought down trees and damaged buildings. The Japan Meteorological Agency issued its highest-level rain warning earlier in the week, alongside landslide warnings. Hundreds of thousands of people were evacuated. On Thursday, models indicated that areas just south of the two prefectures could receive up to another 200 mm as rain continued to move in from the west.
