Safe Food Initiative: Parmelin launches the No campaign ahead of the September 27 vote
Switzerland’s Federal Council has launched its campaign against the popular initiative “For Safe Food”, which will be put to a vote on September 27, 2026. At a press conference on August 11, Swiss President Guy Parmelin set out the government’s objections. The initiative would require Switzerland to raise its food self-sufficiency rate—the share of domestic consumption covered by national production—from about 45% to at least 70% within ten years. The Federal Council instead backs the Agricultural Policy 2030 framework, now being developed, which targets 50% and covers the entire food supply chain.
