Germany: June heat costs the economy €6.32 billion
Heat during the final two weeks of June cost the German economy an estimated €6.32 billion. Production, retail and the food sector were among the activities particularly affected. An analysis conducted for Handelsblatt puts the cost of each day above 35°C at nearly €1 billion. Winter wheat yields are down by as much as 15% in some regions, while rapeseed losses could reach 18%. In Düsseldorf-Angermund, a refrigeration failure at a Lidl store also forced staff to close chilled aisles and discard goods.
