Marcinelle 1956: 70 Years Later, Eight Victims of Mining Disaster Still Unidentified
Seventy years after the Bois du Cazier mining disaster—a coal mine near Charleroi, Belgium—eight of the 262 miners killed on August 8, 1956 remain unidentified, according to Le Monde. In 2021, the fourteen previously unknown bodies were exhumed for DNA analysis. Six of them have since been formally identified. August 8, 2026 marks the 70th anniversary of what remains the deadliest mining disaster in Belgian history.
