Lake Kariba ferry disaster: death toll reaches 80
A passenger ferry capsized on Lake Kariba on August 11, 2026, in rough waters and violent winds. The death toll reached 80 by August 16, 2026, after eight more bodies were recovered, according to Zimbabwe's police. At least 157 people were aboard the vessel, which was authorized to carry only 90 passengers. Civil protection authorities had reported that 77 people were rescued by August 12. The number of children among the victims remains unknown.
