Cuba: Students Denounce Education Crisis at University of Havana
Cuban students protested outside the University of Havana on March 9, 2026, against the deterioration of the national education system. Education became a national priority following the 1959 revolution that overthrew Fulgencio Batista. With massive Soviet support, Cuba developed strong education and healthcare systems that were regional leaders across Latin America. These achievements gradually eroded after the Soviet Union's collapse. Today, young Cubans are leaving the country in large numbers due to lack of future prospects.
