Andreas Glarner announces retirement from politics and relinquishes federal and cantonal posts
Aargau National Councillor Andreas Glarner announced on Thursday that he is retiring from politics and relinquishing both his federal mandate and the presidency of the cantonal Swiss People’s Party (SVP). The 63-year-old said he had faced no internal pressure and wanted to hand his responsibilities to people who were “younger and more competent”. Glarner joined the SVP in 1992 and has served in the National Council since 2015. Le Temps describes him as ideologically close to Sarah Regez, a 32-year-old Basel-Landschaft cantonal parliamentarian who became the party’s Head of Strategy in 2024.
