Syria-Israel: Damascus Works on Multilateral Security Agreement, Says al-Sharaa
Syrian interim president Ahmed al-Sharaa has told Al Jazeera that Syria is actively working toward a multilateral security agreement with Israel, hoping such a deal could open the way to "comprehensive peace" with the Jewish state. These remarks coincide with UN Secretary-General António Guterres' visit to Syria—the first by a UN chief since 2009—during which Guterres called Israeli violations of the 1974 disengagement agreement "unacceptable and must stop." Israeli-Syrian talks began in September 2025, and a US-supervised communications channel was established in early January 2026.
