France: First EU country to ban social media for under-15s
On July 21, 2026, the French Parliament adopted legislation banning social media for people under 15, making France the first EU member state to take this step. The National Assembly approved the bill 279 to 81; the Senate approved it 243 to 2. The law prohibits new registrations as of September 1, 2026, with a four-month transition period for existing accounts, which will close completely by January 1, 2027. A constitutional review could, however, delay its entry into force.
