Sam Kerr Joins Gotham FC: Record Attendance at New York, Call for Australian Women's Soccer
Sam Kerr, 32, captain of Australia's national women's soccer team (the Matildas), has joined Gotham FC, the defending champion of the NWSL (National Women's Soccer League, America's top professional women's soccer league), after six and a half years at Chelsea. Her debut at Citi Field drew more than 42,000 spectators—a record for a women's sports event in New York City. In her second match, Kerr helped Gotham FC mount an extraordinary comeback, overturning a 0-2 deficit to win 3-2. The move has prompted Kerr to renew her call for greater investment in Australia's A-League Women, the nation's semi-professional women's soccer championship.
