Texas: eleven smugglers indicted following death of seven migrants in freight car
The U.S. Department of Justice announced on July 24, 2026, the indictment of 11 people for human trafficking, following the death of seven migrants in a freight car in Texas. On May 9, 2026, smugglers locked the victims in an unventilated freight car at Del Rio, with temperatures exceeding 88°F (31°C). One migrant died in San Antonio; six additional bodies were discovered the next day in Laredo. Among the victims was a 14-year-old. Two suspects remain at large.
