Colombia earthquake kills about 300 in Cali; dog found alive in deceased owner’s arms
The earthquake in Colombia has killed about 300 people in Cali, according to France 24 and Lost in the Jungle. Hundreds are also missing. As of August 16, 2026, rescue teams were still searching the rubble, although hopes of finding survivors were fading. Cali resident Lenny Ruiz died while protecting her dog, Salomon, when their building collapsed. The animal was found alive in her arms. Washington announced $1 billion in aid for Colombia on August 8, 2026. Abelardo de la Espriella was identified as Colombia’s new head of state.
