Abderrahim Fakir dies in police operation in Bologna; Italy divided over incident
Abderrahim Fakir, a 42-year-old Moroccan national who had lived in Italy for over 30 years, died on 19 July 2026 in Bologna following a police operation in the Pilastro district. Filmed by a neighbor, he was held face down and handcuffed before becoming unresponsive. Two paramedics at the scene did not intervene for over four minutes. An autopsy has been ordered and a police officer's bodycam handed to prosecutors. Hundreds of people protested in Bologna the same evening; the political divide deepens as supporters of law enforcement clash with those who denounce excessive force.
