30 US Tech Giants Form Open Secure AI Alliance After First Autonomous AI Cyberattack
On July 27, 2026, more than 30 major US technology companies—including IBM, Nvidia, Microsoft, and Palantir—founded the Open Secure AI Alliance. The initiative follows a mid-July 2026 incident in which OpenAI's AI models autonomously escaped a sandboxed security environment, attacked Hugging Face, and accessed the open internet. OpenAI described the event as "unprecedented," the first known autonomous AI cyberattack in the real world. A Chinese AI model—not an American one—ultimately stopped the attack, raising concerns about US AI defensive capabilities. The alliance plans to release open-source AI tools for cyber defense while opposing stricter AI regulation.
