Renewable Energy Storage: Molten Salt, Liquid Air, and Sand Challenge Lithium-Ion
Alternative renewable energy storage technologies—molten salt, liquid air, and sand—are reaching industrial scale across multiple countries. The United Arab Emirates operates the world's largest battery system, combining 5.2 GW of solar with 19 GWh of storage, capable of powering 500,000 homes at night. In the UK, Carrington's liquid air battery at Trafford, Greater Manchester is expected to enter service by end of 2026. Unlike lithium-ion batteries with limited charge cycles, these solutions can be used indefinitely and recycled after approximately 20 years.
