UK–EU relations: London seeks to speed up post-Brexit talks
Andy Burnham’s UK government wants to accelerate post-Brexit negotiations and deepen relations with the European Union, according to its new lead negotiator, Hamish Falconer. Labour’s refusal to reopen discussions on the single market or customs union remains unchanged. London is instead targeting cooperation on services, visa-free travel for Britons working in the EU and mutual recognition of qualifications. A youth mobility agreement is still held up by a dispute over university tuition fees. The summit originally scheduled for July 2026 has been postponed, and no replacement date has been set.
