Six Comorian Medinas Inscribed on UNESCO World Heritage List, a First for the Archipelago
On July 25, 2026, six Comorian medinas — historic quarters of a city as opposed to modern areas — were inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List, according to Le Monde. This marks a first: the Comoros had previously had no sites on this list, which catalogs more than 1,200 cultural and natural properties worldwide. Four of these medinas are located on the island of Grande Comore, and two are on the island of Ndzouani. This recognition is presented as a lever for promoting their preservation.
