García Márquez's Mexican House Closes to the Public on July 31, 2026
Gabriel García Márquez's home, the 1982 Nobel Prize in Literature laureate's residence, will close to the public on July 31, 2026. Located in Jardines del Pedregal, an upscale residential neighborhood in southern Mexico City, the house had welcomed visitors since 2021. Despite charging 400 Mexican pesos (approximately $23) per ticket, maintenance costs could not be covered. Emilia García, the writer's granddaughter, described the project as complex to manage without a financial partner. Plans to transform the home into a museum and establish reading workshops have been abandoned. The property, where García Márquez lived for 39 years until 2014, offered visitors access to his office.
