Australia Ends Fuel Excise Relief: Petrol Set to Exceed A$2 per Litre
Australia will end its fuel excise relief on August 2, 2026, removing a government subsidy of 16 cents per litre. As of August 1, petrol already costs more than A$1.90 per litre across all Australian capital cities. According to The Guardian, prices are expected to surpass A$2 per litre for petrol and A$2.40 per litre for diesel within days. Minister Bowen confirmed on August 1 that the scheme, initially introduced in March 2026 at 32 cents per litre before being reduced to 16 cents in July, will not be extended.
