High Fens: wildfire reaches 3,000 hectares, two villages evacuated
A wildfire in Belgium's High Fens nature reserve more than doubled in size within 24 hours, reaching 3,000 hectares by early Sunday, according to the BBC. Hundreds of firefighters battled the blaze for a third consecutive day, with two nearby villages evacuated as a precautionary measure. No homes were damaged. Two Swedish water-bombing aircraft joined four helicopters already deployed—two Belgian and two Dutch. Belgian Interior Minister Bernard Quintin announced that two fire fronts threatening the towns of Jalhay and Monschau had been contained. Local farmers also transported water tankers to support teams working on both sides of the German border.
