US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has called for all Bank Melli branches outside Iran to be closed, according to The New York Times. Bank Melli, Iran’s first national bank and the country’s former central bank, is Iran’s largest bank. It is already subject to several rounds of sanctions that severely restrict its ability to operate abroad.
