Airbus Tests Folding Wings for Next-Generation Narrowbody Aircraft
On July 21, 2026, Airbus announced at the Farnborough Air Show that it will test folding wing extensions for its next-generation aircraft. Four- to 5-meter extensions will be mounted on an A321neo—a single-aisle, twin-engine aircraft and the longest version of the A320 family—for flight testing starting in the second half of 2027 at Broughton, Wales. Airbus must finalize its next aircraft configuration by 2030. Separately, Rolls-Royce said it has two years to persuade Airbus and Boeing to select its UltraFan engine.
