Electric door handles: US requires emergency exits on all vehicles
The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) announced on July 24, 2026, the launch of a procedure to develop new federal regulations. These would require all motor vehicles sold in the United States to have a reliable and clearly identifiable emergency exit system. The initiative follows a petition and several accidents involving flush electronic door handles, particularly on Tesla vehicles, where occupants survived the initial impact but could not exit the vehicle.
