Retroactive clause threatens Dominic Fritz’s mandate and €770 million in EU funds
A retroactive clause targeting Timișoara mayor Dominic Fritz could end his mandate and jeopardise a €770 million tranche of EU funding. According to the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Romanian nationalists and post-communist Social Democrats backed the provision in a draft integrity law. The legislation is one of six reforms Romania must adopt or amend by the end of August to unlock more than €5 billion in outstanding EU funds. Christian Democratic and liberal members of the European Parliament are already calling for hundreds of millions of euros intended for Bucharest to be frozen.
